The 2025/26 Christmas break — and what it costs in leave
Christmas Day 2025 falls on a Thursdayand New Year's Day 2026 on a Thursday. That puts the run from Wednesday 24 December to Thursday 1 January — nine days off — within reach of just three days of leave in Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland and Slovakia. Elsewhere the same run costs four in 17 countries and five in 6 countries.
Boxing Day, 26 December 2025, is a Friday and a national public holiday in 21 of the 27 countries. Epiphany, 6 January 2026, is a Tuesday and a national holiday in 11 countries.
The arithmetic assumes a Monday–Friday working week and counts national public holidays only. Regional holidays and days that are customary rather than statutory — Christmas Eve in Denmark and Sweden among them — are not included, so in some countries you may need less leave than this says.
