How this page decides

"Today" means today in the country you asked about, not where you are reading from. Ask about Germany from India and the answer is for the current date in Berlin, which is the only reading that makes sense: a public holiday is a date in a national calendar, and whether the 3rd of October is a holiday in Germany does not depend on your own clock being a few hours ahead.

The answer counts national public holidays only. Two categories are deliberately left out. Regional holidays are not included, so on Corpus Christi this page says no for Germany even though Bavaria has the day off. And days that are customary rather than statutory — Christmas Eve in Denmark and Sweden, Midsummer Eve in Finland — do not make the answer yes, because whether you actually get them depends on your employer or collective agreement rather than on the law.

The page loads this year and next together, so it keeps working through the end of December instead of running out of dates: asking on 30 December still returns New Year's Day as the next holiday. The countdown to each upcoming date is also counted in that country's timezone, so it never reads "in 0 days" for something that is tomorrow there.

Why does it say no when my region has the day off?+

Because only national public holidays count towards the answer. Several countries set holidays regionally — Germany by Land, Spain by autonomous community, Switzerland by canton — and those dates are on the region’s own page rather than here.

Is Christmas Eve a public holiday?+

Not in any of the countries on this site as a statutory national holiday, although in Denmark, Sweden and Finland almost everyone has the day off by custom or collective agreement. Days like that are shown on the country pages and labelled, but they do not count as a public holiday here.
