Days listed but not counted in the 10 above

These days appear on many calendars as public holidays, and sources genuinely disagree about them. Where they conflict, we follow the official government or statutory source and name it below, so a day is only counted in the totals on this page if the law actually gives it to you. That is why our figure can be lower than the one you see elsewhere.

Good Friday (Goede Vrijdag)Not a day off
What the law says: Not one of the ten legal public holidays set by the Royal Decree of 18 April 1974.
In practice: Banks and Euronext Brussels close, and many employers grant the day under a sector collective agreement — so in practice a large share of employees do have it off.
Source followed: Royal Decree of 18 April 1974, art. 1 (ejustice.just.fgov.be)
Easter Sunday (Pasen)Not a day off
What the law says: Not listed in the Royal Decree of 18 April 1974.
In practice: Listed here for completeness. It always falls on a Sunday, so no working day is lost either way.
Source followed: Royal Decree of 18 April 1974, art. 1 (ejustice.just.fgov.be)
Day after Ascension DayNot a day off
What the law says: Not a legal public holiday in Belgium at all.
In practice: Very widely granted as a bridge day, particularly in the public sector and banking, which is why it appears on many calendars. There is no legal entitlement to it.
Source followed: Royal Decree of 18 April 1974, art. 1 (ejustice.just.fgov.be)
St. Stephen's Day (Boxing Day)Not a day off
What the law says: Not one of the ten legal public holidays. Only 25 December is.
In practice: Banks and much of the public sector close on 26 December, and some collective agreements grant it.
Source followed: Royal Decree of 18 April 1974, art. 1 (ejustice.just.fgov.be)

  • Apple Calendar (iPhone or Mac): open this link and confirm — it subscribes directly.
  • Outlook: Add calendar → Subscribe from web, then paste the link.
