How long weekends are calculated

A long weekend forms whenever a public holiday falls on a Friday or a Monday, giving a 3-day weekend. It runs longer when holidays stack — Good Friday plus Easter Monday gives four days — and only statutory days off count, never days that are merely customary. All of these need no annual leave.

Only 3 October is set federally. Every other German holiday is state law, which is why the totals differ by Land.

How are long weekends calculated?+
A long weekend forms whenever a public holiday falls on a Friday or a Monday, giving a 3-day weekend, without using any annual leave. It gets longer when holidays stack: Good Friday plus Easter Monday makes a 4-day weekend, and a holiday on both the Thursday and the Friday makes four days from Thursday to Sunday. Days that are widely taken off but are not statutory — Christmas Eve in Sweden, or the day after Ascension in Belgium — do not count, because your employer is not obliged to give them to you.
